During the Covid-19 pandemic, President Donald Trump has been holding daily briefings with his ‘Task Force’; a motley crew of whichever hapless White House staffers happen to be caught in the firing line of the President’s demagoguery.
While this does serve as a chance for many Americans to hear medical advice from the (real or supposed) experts, the two-hour long spectacle truly serves as a chance for the President to insert his large face directly into the public view.
Case in point; on Wednesday President Trump fielded a question from New York Post reporter Steven Nelson. Nelson summarized the plot of the popular Netflix show ‘Tiger King’, and noted that the President’s son, Donald Trump Jr. had said he would advocate for a Presidential pardon for the former zoo owner.
But maybe that’s not as weird as it first appears.
For those not familiar with the show, or the show’s main character, imagine every weird news story you ever heard about Florida mixed together, and add more tigers. It's like watching a car crash in slow-motion. The show’s characters each bring a different dimension to this surreal look at unregulated, private zoos.
The show follows zoo owner Joseph Maldonado-Passage as he runs a private zoo in Oklahoma, in the face of antagonism from Florida animal rights activist Carole Baskin. Exotic was convicted in 2018 of plotting to have Baskin assassinated.
The ratings hit of the quarantine, the show racked up over 34 million views in just ten days, a number possibly made bigger by the sheer amount of bored people aged 18 and up during this current crisis. In fact, that number is probably bigger, due to the many people who log in on their loved one’s Netflix account.
Trump, (a lover of reality television), loves to boast about how famous he is, much like Joe Exotic. They both love to show off; Trump, his bankrupt casinos, resorts and steaks. Exotic; his zoo, animals, guns, and strange glam-camo-cowboy fashion. The pair both ran for President in 2016.
They both have ridiculous hairstyles.
It does not take a lot of imagination to see these two preposterous, toxic men meeting up and being business associates. in the future. I can see it now; the Trump-Exotic Resort, Zoo and Production Studio.
Exotic, age uncertain, said in the show he would not go back to running a zoo. Before his conviction, he had left his former zoo, and moved to an undisclosed location in Oklahoma.
It was reported on March 26th that Exotic had filed a $49 million jailhouse lawsuit, and specifically requested a Presidential pardon.
The lawsuit starts with the manifesto “This lawsuit has been filed in the name of Justice, The Trump Administration must be made aware of the Overreach, perjury, abuse of power and the failure to uphold the Oath of their position which is truth and Justice for all,”
People on Twitter illustrated their disgust for the reporter to even ask the question, especially a press briefing designed to give Americans possibly life-saving information.
Well, anyway, good to see the President focusing on what really matters here; getting a part in season two of 'Tiger King.'
Maybe that reporter should ask Trump about reuniting with Macaulay Culkin for a reboot of Home Alone. From today's briefing, it certainly seems like the President has the time on his hands.
